I’m Not an Adult, I Just Play One on T.V.

Just because you’ve graduated (or are about to) doesn’t necessarily mean you need to suddenly be an adult but, if you want to secure a job any time soon, it might mean you at least need to “play one on T.V.”. While you can still hold on to a little bit of you college-lie personality on the inside, presenting a level of maturity to a would-be employer on the outside is key.

What can be done today to help your cause?

This is a bad ideaFirst, remove or de-tag any pictures of you on Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, etc. which could be potentially incriminating if seen — i.e. any pictures of you drinking underage, or passed out at a party with a penis drawn on your forehead (we’ve all been there…). it’s been reported that more & more employers are checking up on applicants across social networking sites to do their own personal background checks. A good rule of thumb: if you’d think twice about showing a picture to your mom, take it down.

Secondly, make sure that anywhere a potential employer would leave a message for you is appropriately presented. Meaning, if you leave your cell phone number on an application, make sure your voicemail message isn’t “hey… uhhh… you know what to do”. Instead, try something like, “Hi, you’ve reached (your first & last name). I am unable to take your call right now, but please leave your name & number and I’ll return your call as soon as I can. Thank you!”.

Along the same lines, if your e-mail address is on your resume, it’s probably not a good idea for that address to be sexylilchick_2000@yahoo.com; sign up for a new account with your name as the address before you put it on any job application.

And lastly, if you’re going to play the part of an adult, it’s important to have the right props - get some shirts & ties, a blazer, nice shoes; get your resume cleaned up; do a little personal grooming and get out there. good luck.
